I didn’t post this, but thanks to OP for crediting me! And wow at all the comments & tags! Most of them had me cracking up but this one was not so good: "you can really overlook skin color on how f*cking fantastic the cosplay is"
Skin color is not something negative you have to overlook to appreciate the ‘rest of’ the person you are looking at. It is not a flaw that you have to ignore in order to admire someone’s work. The person who said this was not complimenting me but exposing their own racial bias.
My skin color is not something ‘wrong’ with my costumes. Being a black woman enhances my costumes. Black women are the beautiful flowers that white supremacy tried to kill but we kept growing anyway. They try to tell us we’re ugly and dirty and sadly some of us start to believe it. They sell us skin bleach & hair straighteners, and white wash our characters and expect us to be complacent. When we speak out we’re told we’re too loud and angry and unfeminine.
I appreciate all the kind words on this post but I want to say that it’s not a compliment to express approval of someone ‘in spite of’ that person’s race. If you can’t appreciate my work without a negative remark about my skin color, the problem most certainly is not with me but within you.
I took my second sewing class today! The first one I did, I used their machine, but I found a place that goes over sewing using your own machine :D It was really good and confidence boosting. I’m bummed though, because making buttonholes on my sewing machine is a bitch. The annoying part is that my model usually has a 4 step buttonhole dial, but my model is the one right below and does not have this.
So to make buttonholes, I have to actually flip the whole garment/piece and always sew forward. I can’t actually make a satin stitch tight enough going in reverse.
It’s frustrating and it’s hard to get things straight.
So… I may attempt a bound buttonhole instead. Am I crazy? Maybe? I don’t know.
Anyway. Hurrah! Basic use of sewing machine skill, unlocked.
A preview of some of the Fan Expo photos that I was looking at. I think I’ll be making a post sometime next week. Until then enjoy the best portal duel cosplay that I’ve seen. Featuring http://poisonne.com/ and Shane
When a neighbor found Jean Hilliard in the snow she was frozen solid. That’s not euphemism; she was literally frozen like a turkey in your grandma’s deep freeze. Her body was too frozen to pierce with a needle, her temperature too low to register and when they took her to the hospital they loaded her into the car diagonally like a piece of lumber from Home Depot. She was, by nearly every measure, literally stone cold dead.
When the Jeansicle arrived at the hospital doctors tried to thaw her out, but nobody had much hope for a happy ending. Even if she wasn’t dead, all medical evidence suggested she’d at least have severe frostbite and brain damage.
As Jean lay wrapped in an electric heating pad her eyelids began to flutter, and after some time she thawed completely, returning to life as if nothing had happened. She showed absolutely no ill effects from her little nap in the snowbank — no frostbite, no brain damage, not even any freezer burn. The 19-year old woman from North Dakota had, essentially, come back from the dead completely unharmed. Had she been sipping on antifreeze cocktails earlier in the evening? Did Mr. Freeze secretly give her up for adoption as a baby? Dr. George Sather, who treated her, isn’t ruling anything out. As he put it, “I can’t explain why she’s alive.”
